The Buck Stops Here

Rick’s knowledge of the terrain made the shot possible after being busted and having to get into range with 30 mph winds.

I had hunted with my son in 2020 on his deer hunt with R and R Outfitters and Guide Service. Rick did not know I was going to draw the tag the next year but I was so impressed with my sons hunt that my decision was made. I talked with Rick in Dec and to my shock (and luck) someone had already booked opening week. They say that timing is everything and boy was it. On the 2nd morning of the hunt we found an amazing buck and were able to get on it. Rick’s knowledge of the terrain made the shot possible after being busted and having to get into range with 30 mph winds. All I can hope now is to draw a random tag to enjoy Ricks company again!

It didn’t take long after talking with Rick the first time to know my choice was made.

After waiting 17 years to draw a deer tag. I knew even though I could do it myself, with this many points I couldn’t chance it. I decided what zone I wanted to hunt and starting talking to guides and outfitters in May. It didn’t take long after talking with Rick the first time to know my choice was made. His knowledge of the area, history , and personality were all a fit. The camp, food, accommodations , and hunt were all above my expectations. Even with the worst conditions possible fire, smoke, heat, and full moon I ended up killing my biggest deer to date and put the tag to great use.

Rick knows this country extremely well and was able to put me and my hunting partner onto some really nice bucks!

If you are fortunate to draw an X5B tag, I highly suggest you utilize Rick as your guide into some big country that contains a lot of great California Mule Deer! Rick knows this country extremely well and was able to put me and my hunting partner onto some really nice bucks! A great and successful hunt! Had a lot a fun, good accommodations and super good food prepared by Trevor! A great time and made some new friends! I would utilize Rick again in a heartbeat!

Hiring Rick was one of the best hunting decisions I have made in my 50 plus years in the field.

After accumulating 17 years of points to hunt X5B, I struggled with the choice of a DIY hunt or hiring a guide with knowledge of the unit to help with my hunt. Hiring Rick was one of the best hunting decisions I have made in my 50 plus years in the field. Great camp, top notch equipment, excellent meals with Trevor preparing awesome dishes. However, the ultimate reason you hire a guide is their knowledge of the unit. Rick has been in this unit for over 28 years and it showed. Rick knows where the animals are and what is over the next ridge. I hunted with a friend and Rick put us on bucks every day. I learned a thing or two about glassing from Rick that I will utilize on my own hunts. He is the most meticulous person behind the glass I have hunted with. He is extremely knowledgeable about what animals will score and what is in the unit at the time you hunt. You can chose to take an animal or pass with no pressure from Rick. I took a nice 4X4 and Rick took over and cared for the meat like a pro. If you draw this area for Deer or Antelope either rifle or archery I would highly recommend Rick and R & R Outfitters and Guide Service.

Rick is the real deal.

For every really good guide like Rick, there are dozens of phonies. By now I hope you have come to the conclusion to give Rick a call and are in the process of dialing his number. It will be the wisest call you ever make. Rick is the real deal. He is honest, straight forward, knows his stuff and is worth every penny. In addition to Antelope, he guides for many other species both with rifle or bow.

Rick got me on them right away and after a stalk that took about 4 hours he got us to within 50 yards!

I first want to begin with a thank you to Rick for one of the best hunting experiences I have ever had. I had no idea how to hunt these smart and always on the move animals, but Rick got me on them right away and after a stalk that took about 4 hours he got us to within 50 yards!  So I got my first Antelope that measured 14 3\4!!   A trophy and a hunt worth remembering. Rick keeps a nice camp, cooks great food, and is a pleasure to be around.
 A quality hunt!!
 See you next time Rick.

Overall, this was an A+ experience and hunt.

After applying for a California Antelope tag for almost 30 years, I finally drew one. I knew I wanted to get a guide that knew the area, and maximize my chances at a good buck. I also wanted a public lands hunt. Staying in a hotel and hunting in a private alfalfa field was not what I was looking for, and Rick and Ryan delivered. Below are some of the thing that Rick and Ryan did for my hunt to help me get a great buck.

  • Scouted my area several times, starting many weeks before the season to locate quality bucks.

  • Called me regularly to let me know how the scouting was going. Made it clear to me what to expect.

  • Had a great camp set up before I arrived, that included a private wall tent for me, a wall tent for meals, ATV’s, 4x4 pickups, meals, and all amenities to make for a comfortable camp and hunt.

  • Had great spotting scopes to scan for bucks from a distance before we chose to move on them.

  • Both Rick and Ryan were honest in their opinions on the size of the bucks we were viewing. Rick talked me out of a couple of bucks I would have shot if not for his opinion. He never pressured me to take a shot I didn’t feel comfortable with. We saw hundreds of antelope and many big bucks.

  • When we stalked in on bucks, both Rick and Ryan always had a game plan on how to close the distance, using their knowledge of the area, gps, spotting scopes, and rangefinders.

After I finally decided on a beautiful 15”+ buck, Rick and Ryan took care to get the antelope off of the mountain, professionally skinned, and hung in camp. They took special care with the cape to make sure it would be in good shape for the taxidermist. The next morning, he quartered it for the journey home. Overall, this was an A+ experience and hunt. I have no reservations about recommending R & R Guide Service to anyone that is looking for a big-game guide.

Going from 1300 yards to 300 yards undetected, one great shot and he was mine.

After the first weekend of being unsuccessful, tired and a little down, I was able to talk with Rick. Without any hesitation he said come on up to camp and we'll get you a buck antelope. We started late Friday afternoon, glassing for a good buck. With Rick's knowledge of the area and glassing techniques, we were able to find this great buck. We made a plan to stalk this buck and headed out. Going from 1300 yards to 300 yards undetected, one great shot was mine.

Thank you, Rick, for your hospitality and generosity to stop what you were doing and go out of your way to help me with this once in a lifetime hunt.

When the season finally arrived, we were able to locate and harvest the best buck of the three

I recruited the help of Rick Pollard of R&R Guide Service. We scouted a month before the season and were able to locate three shooter bucks, all 170+. When the season finally arrived, we were able to locate and harvest the best buck of the three thanks to Rick's knowledge of the country and his glassing abilities. We took this buck opening day, scoring 185 6/8. Thank you, Rick, for an awesome hunt!

I brought home my best buck to date

I've known Rick for 13 years, but have never hunted with him until last year. I was missing out for sure! Last season, I was drawn for a X3A tag. I hunted the first weekend with a friend and was unsuccessful. Rick guided the first week in X5B, Lassen County, and was successful with both client so he came over to my zone, set up camp, and I met him there to hunt the second weekend. I was only able to scout twice going into the season, but because of Rick's experience tracking deer and knowledge of their behaviors, that didn't matter in the end. I brought home my best buck to date, a really nice 3X3 on the second day of the hunt. He also has an amazing camp set up. We were prepared fore anything. It was truly a great hunting experience! I will definitely use his guide services again.

He guided my son and I on a dandy 3X3 that I would have never seen if it wasn't for Rick's expertise.”

I highly recommend Rick Pollard from R&R Outfitters on any deer hunt. Rick is knowledgeable, great to hunt with, and well prepared. He guided my son and I on a dandy 3X3 that I would have never seen if it wasn't for Rick's expertise. Thank you, Rick, for memories that my son and I will never forget!

Every season, he continues to put his clients on world-class mule deer, black tail, pronghorn, and elk.

Rick is himself one of the most successful archery hunters in Northern California. His knowledge of public land in the State is second to none for finding big game. Every season, he continues to put his clients on world-class mule deer, black tail, pronghorn, and elk. My experience while hunting pronghorn with Rick was exceptional!
